The authors of Sketching Software in the Wild argue that understanding how professional software developers use diagrams and sketches in their work is an unexplored terrain. This shown through summaries of a number of studies on sketching and diagramming across a variety of domains, and arguments for the limited generalizability. In order to develop further insight, the authors describe the design of a research project they started and its grounding theoretical assumptions.
